A Breed Born
from the Arctic

1988

Introduced to the World

After years of careful, private breeding, Linda Orton began sharing the Alaskan Klee Kai with friends and family. The response was immediate โ€” people were enchanted. The breed was a husky you could actually live with in a regular home.

1995

UKC Recognition

The United Kennel Club officially recognized the Alaskan Klee Kai as a distinct breed in 1995 โ€” a milestone that legitimized decades of Linda Spurlin's dedicated work and opened the breed to a wider world of enthusiasts.

1997

The Name is Sealed

"Klee Kai" comes from an Athabaskan phrase meaning "small dog" โ€” a fitting, respectful nod to the indigenous Alaskan heritage at the heart of the breed. The name was officially adopted and has carried the breed forward ever since.

2020s

Rising Beloved

Social media discovered what Klee Kai owners already knew. Their wolf-like faces, husky markings at half the scale, and expressive personalities made them internet darlings. Waitlists at reputable breeders grew long. The AKK was no longer a secret.

The Soul of a
Klee Kai

Every Klee Kai is their own universe โ€” but the breed carries certain beautiful truths.

๐Ÿบ

Reserved with Strangers

The Klee Kai is not a dog for everyone โ€” and that's precisely what makes them so special to those they choose. They assess new people carefully, quietly, on their own terms. Their wariness is not fear; it is discernment.

Nova's take
"She will watch you from across the room for twenty minutes before deciding if you deserve a sniff."
โค๏ธ

Deeply Loyal

Once a Klee Kai has decided you are theirs, that loyalty is absolute. They bond with fierce intensity to their chosen people โ€” following you room to room, sleeping against you, watching you with those luminous eyes.

Nova's take
"She has claimed her family completely. Strangers are assessed. Family is everything."
๐ŸŽญ

Vocal & Expressive

The Klee Kai speaks. Not just barks โ€” they vocalize with a rich range of howls, whines, trills, and what can only be described as conversation. If you talk to them, they will talk back. This is non-negotiable.

Nova's take
"She has opinions about dinner time, bedtime, your departures, and squirrels."
โšก

Energetic but Adaptable

Unlike their full-sized husky cousins, the Klee Kai can adapt to apartment living โ€” but they need their zoomies. A good run, a puzzle toy, and a sunny spot to watch the world from is all they ask.

Nova's take
"At 14, her zoomies are more considered now. But they still happen."
๐Ÿง

Highly Intelligent

The Klee Kai is sharp. They learn quickly, remember everything, and will absolutely figure out how to open the treat cabinet if you let them practice long enough. Mental stimulation is as important as physical exercise.

Nova's take
"She has never once been fooled by the fake throw. Not once."
๐ŸŒจ๏ธ

Cold Weather Soul

Born of Alaskan breeding, the Klee Kai carries the Arctic in their blood. Snow is not an obstacle โ€” it is a playground. Their double coat handles cold with ease, though they'll still demand to come inside after a dignified amount of time.

Nova's take
"Nova is the exception. A lifetime in Oklahoma and Arizona means she has encountered snow exactly twice. The breed loves it. The jury is still out on whether she agrees."

Humans Lucky Enough
to be Chosen

The Klee Kai selects their people carefully. These people were selected well.

S
Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas
Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner and musician Joe Jonas are the breed's most famous ambassadors. They owned two black and white Klee Kai โ€” Porky Basquiat and Waldo Picasso. Waldo passed away in 2019 and is deeply remembered by the breed's community.
B
Bill Belichick
New England Patriots head coach and one of the NFL's most storied figures. His Alaskan Klee Kai, Nike, appeared on national television during the 2020 NFL Draft and introduced millions of football fans to the breed overnight.
M
Miley Cyrus
Singer, actress, and lifelong animal advocate. Miley Cyrus has been a devoted Alaskan Klee Kai owner โ€” one of many breeds she has welcomed into her home and her heart over the years.
S
Sharon Osbourne
Television personality and X-Factor judge. Sharon Osbourne is a well-known animal lover whose Klee Kai ownership helped shine a spotlight on the breed in the UK and beyond.
L
The LJNZ Family
And of course โ€” Laura, Joseph, Nova, and Zeus. Nova has been the heart of this family since July 1, 2011. Fourteen years of quiet loyalty, expressive eyes, and the occasional dignified zoom.

Nova

July 1, 2011 ยท 14 years old

Born July 1, 2011, Nova came to the LJNZ family at two years old โ€” a blessing straight from Linda Orton herself, the woman who created the Alaskan Klee Kai breed. She had been set aside from the breeding program for a single extra eyelash. One tiny, perfect imperfection. Linda called her Mikka.

The first 48 hours, she didn't leave her kennel. She watched. She assessed. She was not frightened โ€” she was deliberate. For weeks she slept in her kennel every night, on her own terms, in her own time. Then, around month two, Laura invited her onto the bed. Nova accepted.

She has slept there every night since. That is who Nova is โ€” she does not give her trust easily, but when she gives it, it is forever. Not a rescue. A blessing. Their loss. Our everything.

Living with a Klee Kai

What They Need
to Thrive

๐Ÿƒ

Exercise

Moderate daily exercise โ€” 45 to 60 minutes. They are energetic but not relentless. A good morning walk and an evening play session makes a happy Klee Kai.

๐Ÿงฉ

Mental Stimulation

Puzzle feeders, training sessions, nose work. An understimulated Klee Kai is a creative Klee Kai โ€” and creativity will be aimed at your furniture.

๐Ÿชฎ

Grooming

Double coat means seasonal shedding that will surprise you. Weekly brushing year-round, daily during shedding season. They are naturally clean dogs and rarely need baths.

๐Ÿค

Socialisation

Early and gentle. The breed's wariness of strangers can become anxiety without positive exposure. Patience, never force. Let them set the pace.

๐Ÿ

Living Space

Adaptable. They can thrive in apartments if exercised well. They are escape artists โ€” secure fencing is non-negotiable.

๐Ÿ–

Nutrition

High-quality protein-rich diet. Monitor weight carefully โ€” their small frame means even a pound over optimal weight matters for joint health.

"Not every dog trusts you. The ones who make you earn it โ€”
those are the ones who change you."
